What People Are Saying: The Problems with Ionizers
There are many options in the indoor air quality (IAQ) market. From HEPA filters to ionizers and other options, consumers and contractors need to consider the facts before picking the right solution for their homes or business. Some of the most respected health agencies in the world – including the EPA and WHO – have warned people about ozone in particular, which is a byproduct created by ionizers. On the other hand, SecureAire’s ACTIVE Particle Control™ technology is safe and proven to eliminate up to 99% of the most dangerous particles in the air.
Ionizers Create Ozone, which is a Serious Safety Concern
The Environmental Protection Agency
The EPA notes that, “Ozone is produced indirectly by ion generators” and warns that, “Ozone is a toxic gas.”
The agency also details several serious health concerns related to breathing in this substance: “ozone can damage the lungs…cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation…worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections.”

The Environmental Protection Agency
According to the EPA, “ozone does not remove particles (e.g., dust and pollen) from the air, including the particles that cause most allergies” and notes “ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals.”
“If used at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone applied to indoor air does not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants.”
The EPA also warns consumers that terms used by companies which sell ionizers can be “misleading,” “Manufacturers and vendors of ozone devices often use misleading terms to describe ozone. Terms such as “energized oxygen” or “pure air” suggest that ozone is a healthy kind of oxygen. Ozone is a toxic gas with vastly different chemical and toxicological properties from oxygen.”
“Some manufacturers or vendors suggest that ozone will render almost every chemical contaminant harmless by producing a chemical reaction whose only by-products are carbon dioxide, oxygen, and water. This is misleading.”
Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security
Other independent organizations have also questioned the efficacy of ionizers. For example, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Health Security notes that “School systems should not use unproven technologies such as ozone generators, ionization, plasma, and air disinfection with chemical foggers and sprays,”
SecureAire’s Technology is Superior
SecureAire is a better option than ionizers. Our ACTIVE Particle Control™ technology works differently – and better. We protect human health from dangerous air particles of all sizes without generating harmful byproducts like ozone.
- Science proves SecureAire is effective. Real-world, scientific studies conducted at hospitals and in small spaces prove that our technology can remove up to 99% of dangerous particles from the air, including COVID-19.
- SecureAire relies on controlled charges. Our technology polarizes airborne particles and pathogens with both positive and negative charges in a controlled manner, affecting individual particles and moving them to a filter to be destroyed.
- SecureAire doesn’t generate ozone. Unlike ionizers, our technology does not produce dangerous byproducts because we use a physical process and not chemical reactions.
